Pochettino speaks out on whether Jan Vertonghen is fit enough to face Man City

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, made the eyebrow-raising and perhaps brave call to drop Jan Vertonghen from the squad last week.

Spurs took on newly-promoted Aston Villa at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, fielding a central defence of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.

While the Argentine has paired these two up plenty of times before, the thing that jumped out was that Vertonghen was up in the stands and not on the bench.

Reports later revealed that the Belgian defender was not injured, but dropped from the matchday squad due to a lack of fitness (Metro).

Spurs now come up against Man City, the two-time reigning Champions of the Prem, at the Etihad this weekend.

Pochettino will want to field his best possible XI, but we will have to wait and see whether this includes Vertonghen, or whether he is still frozen out by the boss.

Poch had indicated that Jan is ‘fit’ for the match though (Alasdair Gold):
