Pochettino sums up what the defeat at Burnley means for Spurs going forward

Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 2-1 defeat at Burnley yesterday in what was a massive blow the lilywhites’ title aspirations.

Spurs had returned to Premier League action after a 10-day break which gave enough time for Harry Kane to return to full fitness and was involved from the start.

This was the first of a difficult run of fixtures for Spurs as they have two back-to-back London derbies against Chelsea and Arsenal coming up, after which they travel to Germany for the second leg of the Champions League round of 16-tie against Borussia Dortmund.

However, Spurs slipped up at the first hurdle against the Clarets which has raised serious questions about their ability to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool.

When asked how important it was for Tottenham bounce back against in the upcoming big games, Pochettino said that he considered the Burnley match to be the “big game”.

Speaking to Football.London, Pochettino said: “For me that was the big game. I tried to translate to everyone. Losing this game now of course we need put pressure and try to win because we are going to fight until the end but it would be different with three points today.

“That is not possible. Maybe we are heroes if we win at Stamford Bridge and beat Arsenal but it’s the same feeling as when we lost against Watford. It was in our hands to win and we lost. Then we cannot complain.

“Of course we can beat Chelsea, we can beat Arsenal but in end you’re going to miss three points. If you want to win and make history, this type of game, I don’t know how, but you must win.

“It’s a game that you must win. It’s not about tactics or selection, it’s to come here and fight and dominate the game in all the aspects but it’s true that Burnley today they dominated today in the areas, they were stronger than us and of course that disappointed me.

“We need to try to improve. That is in the way that we are doing things. Massive disappointment. Now we need to prepare for the next game. We need to be ready because it’s going to be another battle there.”
