Pochettino: You can’t compare Spurs with Liverpool

Tottenham lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield yesterday in what was a major blow to Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top 4.

Spurs played well in the second half and missed several chances to take the lead before the home side got the winner courtesy of an Alderweireld own goal after a bad mistake by Lloris.

Tottenham have not finished behind Liverpool in the Premier League since Pochettino took charge back in 2014. That is surely about to change this season as the Reds look likely to push Man City all the way in the race for the title.

Pochettino insisted before the game that Liverpool’s project cannot be compared with his own at Tottenham.

The Argentine said that Tottenham had to focus on other priorities over the past few seasons which have restricted the club’s ability to compete in the transfer window, while Liverpool have been able to channelise all resources into mounting a title challenge.

Speaking ahead of the game the 46-year-old told Sky Sports, “You cannot compare (Liverpool and Tottenham).

“When he [Klopp] arrived at Liverpool, it was only about focussing to try to build a team to be able to compete and be a real contender with other teams.

“Our philosophy is completely different and we cannot compare our two projects, they are on a completely different level.

“In the last two transfer windows we cannot sign one player, it is like we are banned like has happened with some clubs now!

“Because we are focussed on different things, that is why we are different, and we must be focussed on operating in different ways, but always being competitive as football is the most important thing in this company.

“Because they have an unbelievable squad (they are challenging for the title) and they are a team who every season were adding more quality. So it is normal that Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea were building to win and be a real contender.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Miserable, soul-destroying comments from Pochettino. What ‘project’ could there be at any so-called ‘big club’ other than trying to win at football? The whole sorry mess has become a predictable nonsense. Finish above Liverpool in eight of the past nine seasons, and suddenly they’re on a different planet? Come off it. We, like Poch, know that the right investment by our investment company owners could/would have seen us compete properly this season. And what’s Kane meant to think of all this? Project? So he’s meant to kick around in the new WHL for the next what, five years? Ten years? His prime years as a player vanishing in a sea of what could turn out to be mediocrity? I doubt it somehow…
