Portsmouth manager comments on Dane Scarlett form and loan situation

Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley has been speaking to local outlet The Portsmouth News about the situation regarding on-loan Tottenham starlet Dane Scarlett, and insisted the player will not be recalled by his parent club in January.

Scarlett is regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in the Tottenham youth squads (Football.London), having developed through the club’s academy. At just 18 years of age, the striker has already made ten first-team appearances for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

A rarely-used substitute last season, the decision was made to give Scarlett first-team experience through a loan spell this year, and Portsmouth were the side to secure his services.

He has had a strong start to life on the South coast with the League One team, registering five goals and two assists in 23 appearances for Portsmouth so far (Transfermarkt).

Scarlett has certainly impressed Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley and his staff, with Cowley singing his praises to Portsmouth News last month.

With Spurs set to face Portsmouth in the third round of the FA Cup next month, Scarlett will not be available to face his parent club (Football.London), and there has been talk of Spurs utilising their option to recall the youngster in January.

Cowley has denied this though, saying: “It’s been pretty open (with Spurs). We speak daily if not weekly. These big clubs they have the necessary support mechanisms to help their young players and rightly so. We’ve got clear lines of communication.

“With 99% of loan players, there’s a recall. We understand why that is in place. But there is no suggestion they are looking to call him back.”

On the impact Scarlett has had at the club, Cowley said: “Dane is 18, but he trained last week and he looked frightening. Some of his one-v-one play and finishing, wow. He has these days where you see this outstanding potential he possesses.

“He’s just a young player who is still trying to learn about himself, learn about his game and learn about his position and how to perform consistently week in, week out. As I’ve said though on numerous occasions it’s a privilege to work with him every day.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Dane Scarlett really seems to be hitting his stride down at Portsmouth, and while it could be tempting to recall him in case we need him in the first team, I think he will feel the benefit of playing regularly in League One far more than he would if he were sitting on the Spurs bench.
