Positive news for Tottenham midfielder as he finally makes return from injury

After enduring an extremely frustrating season so far, on-loan Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks finally made his first appearance of the campaign for Sampdoria in their clash against Empoli this week.

Winks has spent the majority of the 2022/23 campaign sidelined with an ankle problem, with the midfielder eventually deciding to have surgery to fix the issue back in November (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Thankfully for the 26-year-old, the operation seems to have had the desired effect and the mid-season break for the World Cup has given him some time to work towards full fitness.

After making the matchday squad for the first time this season in the clash against Napoli last week, Winks got his first minutes of the season in Sampdoria’s loss away at Empoli yesterday.

The England international got around 30 minutes of game time under his belt after replacing Bruno Amione in the 62nd minute, with Tyronne Ebuehi’s 55th-minute strike giving the home side all three points.

The defeat leaves Sampdoria in deep trouble, with Dejan Stankovic’s men sitting in 19th place with just nine points from 18 matches but Winks’ return to action is perhaps a small consolation for the Blucerchiati.

Given how poorly Sampdoria are faring this season, Stankovic appears to have little choice but to throw Winks into the deep end and hope that the midfielder can help the club rescue their season. If nothing else, the on-loan Tottenham man now has the chance to put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer.
