Postecoglou admits Spurs are ‘a fair way off’ the title-challenging team he wants

It seems Tottenham are destined to finish fifth in the Premier League this season, and Ange Postecoglou has told the press that his team are still far from what he wants them to be in order to challenge for success, but thinks they can still compete next season regardless.

It has been a rather up-and-down year for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham. The Australian’s tenure began in impressive fashion, with the Lilywhites going unbeaten in the first ten games of the campaign.

However, a defeat against Chelsea back in November ended that run and left Spurs with big injuries and suspensions to deal with. The season has never really got back on track after that game, sadly.

Spurs have to challenge for success every year

Now, after another loss against Chelsea last night, Tottenham’s third straight Premier League defeat, Postecoglou has been thinking about the future and what is needed to make this Spurs side ready to challenge at the very top.

When asked how far away from being a title-challenging team Spurs are, Postecoglou told Football.London: “We’re a long way off but it doesn’t mean we can’t challenge next year. I don’t know which other way to put it.

“I think in terms of the team I want us to be we’re a fair way off, but I am not dismissing the fact that we have to be competitive and challenge for success every year I am here.

“I am not going to dismiss any year as just a building year. Every year is a building year to get to where we want to, but it is also an opportunity for us to have success. As it was this year and we’ve fallen short of that.”

We may have fallen at the final hurdle a little of late, but it’s still been a good season for Spurs and we’ve seen a lot of progress made by the team in general. We are playing more entertaining football, we’ve got a manager who appears to know exactly what is needed to take it to the next level, and we have to be patient and just enjoy this rebuild as it unfolds.
