Postecoglou claims Harry Kane will ‘definitely be back at Tottenham one day’

Ange Postecoglou has said that Harry Kane will definitely be back at Tottenham Hotspur someday in one capacity or another.

Kane’s move to Bayern Munich is now official, with the striker having completed his medical at the Bavarian club.

The fact that the club’s record goalscorer has gone is perhaps only now starting to sink in for Spurs fans, with the Lilywhites now facing the near-impossible task of replacing the 30-year-old.

Postecoglou only got a chance to work with the England captain for a few weeks but the Australian admitted that he had fostered a good relationship with the striker, with the pair having held several discussions along the way about the club.

The Spurs head coach told Football.London about Kane: “He sent me a message and I sent him a message back. I don’t think either of us were surprised by the outcome.

“We’d been talking about it all along anyway, whether that’s about his situation or the club. The way I treat these things is that while they’re here, they’re still part of the club.

“I don’t isolate them or treat them differently because they might be leaving. We had discussions along the way so it wasn’t a surprise or something for either of us to address.”

There have been some suggestions over the last few weeks that Spurs had been pushing for a buy-back clause to be added to the deal (Express), but based on various reports, it does not appear as if such a clause has been agreed (BBC Sport).

Harry Kane will be back at Tottenham one day

Regardless, Postecoglou believes that the centre-forward will return to N17 someday, whether it be during his playing career or after he hangs up his boots.

When asked about the potential existence of a buy-back clause, the 57-year-old said: “No idea, mate. No idea about the details of the deal. He’ll definitely be back at Tottenham one day in one capacity or another. When you have a career like he has at one football club, you’re never not part of it.”

It was never going to be realistic to include a buy-back clause in a deal of this enormity. However, I have no doubt that Kane’s plans would be to return to the Premier League in a few years to try and break Alan Shearer’s record.

The striker will likely give first priority to Spurs but whether the North London club would want to spend big on a player who is in his mid-thirties remains to be seen.
