Postecoglou explains why he will keep playing Richarlison and what would change that

In his latest press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup game against Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been what factors come into play when choosing his team, and how this could affect Richarlison one way or another.

With Harry Kane leaving Spurs earlier this month, it has been down to Richarlison to lead the line for Ange Postecolgou‘s side in the first three games of the Premier League season.

It has been a great start to the new campaign for Tottenham, with two wins and a draw so far. Despite the success of the team as a whole, Richarlison is yet to score a goal for his side.

The Brazilian had a tough time of it last term, with just three goals across the whole campaign (Transfermarkt). At the moment, it seems the lasting effect of that confidence blow has carried over into this season.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou has already insisted he is happy with the work Richarlison is doing on the pitch (Football.London).

Postecoglou wants the best for the Spurs team

Speaking to the press today (via Football.London), Postecoglou was asked whether he will keep playing Richarlison until he finds some form, and the Australian offered an interesting response.

He said: “No, I pick teams that I think will win games. If I think he is going to help us win a game of football, I will put him in. I am not going to put him in there to try and sort of help him in some individual pursuit.

“The players I work with soon come to understand my philosophy around everything individually is, it comes back to the team ethos and what we’re trying to do as a group.

“Within that, sometimes people in a group struggle and it is up to the rest of us to help them through that patch in the best way we can and for the individual to just make sure he is contributing.

“I will put Richy in the team because I think we can win the game with him in the team, not because I am trying to get him into a certain space.

“This is not something we’re trying to create to help individuals through a process, we want to win games of football and we want to play the game a certain way. Every time I pick a team that is all that’s in my head.”

This is a fantastic response from Ange, and is exactly how any football team should operate. Obviously, if an individual needs help with anything, then he should be able to lean on his teammates and coaches, but the team being in the best position to win is always the most important thing.
