Postecoglou gives interesting response to question about Bentancur’s best role at Spurs

In his latest press conference, Ange Postecoglou has been discussing the midfielders he has at his disposal now and, when asked about Rodrigo Bentancur’s role, the Spurs boss offered up a very funny reply.

This weekend, for the first time in a long time, it seems Ange Postecoglou is going to have the luxury of selecting from an almost entirely fit and available squad.

With Heung-min Son and Yves Bissouma back from international duty, and the likes of Giovani Lo Celso pushing to be fit for the visit of Brighton tomorrow, Postecoglou will be faced with quite the selection headache.

And, for the first time, Postecoglou will have the option of playing Bissouma alongside Rodrigo Bentancur. He has previously mentioned how he had big ‘plans’ for putting the two players together but has never had the chance due to injuries, suspensions, and international commitments.

Postecoglou has a lot of options in midfield

When asked about his midfield roster, and in particular that pairing of Bissouma and Bentancur, Postecoglou insisted he is more interested in looking at all of his options now.

He told Football.London: “At least there is that possibility now… it’s not just about those two but about the midfield mix.

“We haven’t had the luxury of being able to come up with different variations of our midfield set-up because they are all unique in their skillset and I think it gives us a real ability to tackle different challenges along the way.”

Then, when asked whether he sees Bentancur specifically as more of a 6 or an 8 style midfielder, Postecoglou quipped: “I see him as a midfielder who can play for us and hopefully we’re getting away from sixes and eights.”

It will be fascinating to see who makes the starting lineup for the Brighton game tomorrow, and that could tell us a lot about what Postecoglou views as his preferred starting XI moving forward, too.
