Postecoglou provides funny reaction to Bentancur playing with a broken toe

Despite playing with a broken toe for Tottenham in recent weeks, Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Rodrigo Bentancur still has another nine to use.

It has been a season of trials and tribulations for Tottenham’s Uruguayan midfielder, with Bentancur having worked hard to return from injury last November only to be sidelined for another two months following a nasty challenge from Aston Villa’s Matty Cash.

By the time Bentancur finally made it back in the new year, Ange Postecoglou had found a successful midfield trio of James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma, and the former Juventus man has found it tricky to force his way back in at times.

However, after two long injury layoffs, it is to be expected that Bentancur may not yet be operating at his peak levels. To make matters worse, the Uruguayan revealed this week that he has been playing with a broken toe!

He told Polideportivo (via ESPN) “I broke it two or three weeks ago, but I’m still playing the same. I broke my phalanx. I had to stop for three or four weeks for it to knit up, and it was impossible. It was before the game against Crystal Palace in training, but here I go, recovering. Once I warm up, I forget.”

Ange Postecoglou not worried about Bentancur’s toe

It appears that neither Bentancur nor Postecoglou are too concerned about it hampering his ability on the pitch, with the Spurs boss making light of the injury in his press conference today.

When he was asked about the broken toe, Ange replied (Football London): “Yeah, broken small toe. He has got nine others.

“You know, I don’t think anyone could question Rodrigo’s courage with what he’s had to deal with recently. He didn’t want to stop playing, the medical advice was he could keep playing so he has still been training and playing.

“He hasn’t missed a session as far as I can see and I think it’s better now anyway so it’s all fine.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Bentancur is a warrior, you can tell that by his general attitude towards training. The man will not miss a session, even if he is in pain. If anything, it seems like the medical team have a job getting him to rest up when he’s actually injured.
