Postecoglou quotes Billy Joel lyrics when asked about Spurs’ set-piece problem

For the umpteenth time, Ange Postecoglou has reiterated his stance that he does not see Tottenham’s set-piece defending as a major issue and this time the Spurs boss quoted Billy Joel’s lyrics in response.

Postecoglou has had to answer several questions about Tottenham’s defensive woes from set-pieces over the course of the season and understandably, the frequency of those questions has gone up since the North London Derby loss.

Spurs were undone by two corner kicks against Arsenal but the Australian has maintained that he does not see it as a major problem and has continued to insist that he will not be spending much time in the training ground working on set-piece defending (Alasdair Gold).

Postecoglou is not worried about set-pieces

The 58-year-old has now reiterated a similar message while acknowledging that it might not be what the journalists and fans want to hear.

Postecoglou pointed out that this is not the first time in his career that he has been asked about defending set-plays, insisting that he is not going to change his methods now.

When asked if he is concerned about the increasing number of goals his side is conceding from corners and free-kicks, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “Not in the least. I get it. It’s not an answer [people want]. To quote Billy Joel ‘you may be right, I may be crazy, but it’s maybe a lunatic you’re looking for’.

“I’m just not interested in it. I never have been. Enough of you [journalists] have done enough research on me to know this is not the first time I’ve been questioned about set-pieces in my coaching career. There is an underlying reason for that which I’m very, very comfortable with.”

When asked what that reason is, he replied “No. Do a bit of work, mate. Come on.” Postecoglou was then quizzed about whether the number of set-piece goals will improve, and he said: “Eventually I will create a team that has success and it won’t be because of working on set-pieces.”

Postecoglou has decided that this is a hill to die on when he could have just easily said that Tottenham will have to improve defending set-pieces. He is now going to be grilled on this topic each time we concede from a corner or an in-direct free-kick.
