Postecoglou responds to question on next Spurs captain amid Lloris exit rumours

Ange Postecoglou has insisted that he has not given much thought to who would be taking the captain’s armband in case Hugo Lloris departs, insisting that he is now prioritising establishing some fundamentals in the squad.

It seems overwhelmingly likely that Lloris‘ eleven-year spell at Spurs will come to an end this summer, with the Lilywhites securing the services of Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli last month.

In fact, Tottenham’s long-standing captain himself admitted back in May that the time has come for him to pursue a new challenge away from North London (Nice-Matin).

Should Lloris depart, the obvious candidate for the captaincy is Kane but there are also doubts about the future of the current Spurs vice-captain, who is the subject of heavy interest from Bayern Munich (Florian Plettenberg).

Postecoglou has not yet chosen his new captain

When asked about who would be getting the captain’s armband, Postecoglou remarked that he has more important things to worry about for the moment, admitting that he still has a lot of decisions to make regarding the future of various players.

The Australian said in his first press conference as Tottenham boss (via Football.London): “As I said, even that, around the captaincy, it’s just not at the forefront of my mind right now.

“What’s at the forefront of my mind is to try to establish where we want to go as a football club and trying to be as clear to people as I can about that, about me and all these kinds of things.

“Because if I start thinking about all that kind of detail right now I’m going to miss the opportunity to really establish some of the fundamentals of what I want us to be.

“In terms of the squad, we’re in that stage like most clubs where you kind of know that there will be activity between now and the start of the season and the end of the window and there will be some players who won’t be here and some players that will come in.

“Again in my mind, I try to keep that with the understanding that until something is certain I’m not going to commit myself either way to whether a player is going to be here or not. There’s no point in wasting energy on something that may or may not happen.

“So far the lads we’ve had in have been excellent. They’ve been brilliant with the staff in adapting and implementing the things I want and we’ll keep moving along.

“We’ll get the rest of the squad back in the next couple of days so it will be great to see everyone in the building.”

Despite what Postecoglou says here, there is no doubt that he would have already given plenty of thought to who to give the captain’s armband to.

However, the Australian might not have wanted to answer the question as it might have perhaps served as confirmation that Lloris is indeed departing.

He probably also did not want to name Kane as his choice of captain before speaking with the striker first.
