Postecoglou says one Spurs star was not fully fit but was ‘desperate to play’

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that despite Son Heung-min not being fully fit, the forward was desperate to play against Liverpool.

In his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou said that both Son and James Maddison were doubtful for the clash on Saturday (Football.London).

In the end, both players started and the duo played crucial roles, with Maddison once again proving Tottenham’s main creative fulcrum while the South Korean got his sixth goal of the Premier League season.

Son was replaced by Manor Solomon on 69 minutes while Maddison came off just ahead of injury time but that did not stop the home side from finding a winner, with Joel Matip turning Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net.

Heung-min Son was carrying a knock for Tottenham

Son did appear to be limping for a few minutes before he came off and Postecoglou revealed after the game that the Tottenham captain was never going to play 90 minutes and praised the effort that he put in for the side when he was on the pitch

When asked about the forward, the Australian told Football.London: “Look, he wasn’t 100% but I had a chat with him yesterday and he was desperate to play. He was going to give what he could and he did.”

“He was never going to play the whole 90, we were always going to give him an hour or so but he led from the front again and he was the one doing the pressing. He got his goal as well so great captain’s effort.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Son’s work rate was commendable as he did not give the Liverpool centre-backs or Allison any time on the ball, thus helping us win the ball back time and again. For the forward to work his socks off for the side despite not being fully fit, shows his commitment to the cause.
