Potential shirt numbers Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin could wear for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur could have two new players this week, with Timo Werner on the verge of completing a loan move to North London, and the negotiations to sign Radu Dragusin thought to be nearing a conclusion. But what shirt numbers would the pair wear for Spurs?

In developments that no one saw coming, Spurs have moved quickly to arrange a six month loan deal for Timo Werner, as first reported by Sky Sports Germany journalist, Florian Plettenberg.

Fabrizio Romano has already given the move the ‘Here we go’ treatment, and it is believed medical tests have been booked for the 27-year-old.

As per The Athletic, Tottenham will cover Werner’s salary until the end of the season, and can make the switch permanent if they choose to, for a fee thought to be between £12.9-17.2m.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s protracted pursuit of a new centre-half, namely Genoa’s Radu Dragusin, could be nearing a successful end. Fabrizio Romano also covered this situation, claiming the deal was in the ‘final stages’ after ‘positive’ talks between the two clubs.

What squad numbers will Werner and Dragusin take?

So, with these two new faces looking set to arrive in North London, it shouldn’t be long until we get to see them wearing the Lilywhite of Tottenham. But what numbers will be on the back of their shirts?

Werner has preferred the number 11 over recent years, claiming the shirt at RB Leipzig during his two spells with the club, and with Chelsea, too. He even told Chelsea’s official website how much he loves the number.

Unfortunately for Werner, Bryan Gil currently occupies the number 11 shirt at Spurs, so unless Gil were to move on this month, Werner will have to compromise. Similarly, the number 19 shirt that he wore at Stuttgart is also taken by Ryan Sessegnon.

Werner also told the Chelsea website that he prefers to have two numbers rather than single-digits, so the most likely option he will take is the number 16. If he wants to venture into higher numbers he can also look at 26, 31, 32, 34, or 39.

As for Dragusin, the centre-back could slot straight into one of the more typical numbers for a player of his position and take the number 6 shirt, which was vacated by Davinson Sanchez in the summer.

If the Romanian were to go a little more unorthodox, he could bag the number 2 shirt, as some centre-halves do, or he could consider the numbers outside of the first XI that we mentioned are available for Werner, too.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot see Werner taking anything other than the number 16 shirt, to be honest. As for Dragusin, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him avoid the more obvious number 6 and go for a random number in the 20s or 30s.
