Poyet predicts Spurs fans will make a big demand of Postecoglou next season

Gus Poyet has said that while Tottenham fans are delighted with the impact that Ange Postecoglou has made since arriving at the club, the supporters will want to see the side challenging for major trophies next season.

This season was always going to be a challenging one for Postecoglou, who took over a Tottenham side which limped to an eighth-place finish last season.

The club also lost their record goalscorer Harry Kane in the summer and the Australian had the difficult task of completely revamping the team’s style of play, with Spurs having been a counter-attacking outfit under their three previous managers.

Postecoglou has had tremendous success, not only making Tottenham one of the most attractive teams to watch in the Premier League but also making them competitive.

When asked about the 58-year-old’s impact, Poyet told Sky Sports: “I’ve got plenty of friends who are Spurs fans, and they’re delighted.

“It was a massive change, and they’re really enjoying watching the team now. They know they are going to go for it in any game, in any competition. If they keep getting better there is only one way, which is up.

“The first season has been outstanding for Postecoglou, and next year the fans are going to ask for something more. That’s how it works!

“Can Tottenham win a trophy, or something they have been after for a long time? It’s a good start, it’s a good atmosphere at the club at the moment and everyone is enjoying watching the team at this time.”

It’s time for Tottenham to win something

Poyet was Tottenham’s assistant manager the last time the club won a trophy back in 2008 and the 56-year-old opined that the increasing prioritisation of Champions League qualification is one of the reasons behind the club’s failure to add to their trophy cabinet in the last 16 years.

The former Spurs midfielder added: “Some people say, ‘Oh, maybe next year?’. When you start with that, then 15 or 16 years go past and you don’t win. Without any doubt, it will be easier with the way the team is playing right now. They are an attacking, offensive team, and they will be closer to winning trophies.

“Unfortunately, 15 years ago or so it became more important to qualify for the Champions League than win trophies. That’s just financial. On the other side are the fans and players. The fans want players, and the players are not winners until they have won something.”

Some managers might use their footballing philosophy as an excuse for not winning trophies but that is not the case with Postecoglou, who has made it clear from day one that he prefers this style of play because it gives his side the best chance of being successful.

The Australian will certainly be setting his sights quite high next season and will believe that his side can challenge the likes of Man City and Liverpool.
