Premier League manager thinks Spurs ‘are able’ to win the league this season

New Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has boldly claimed that Tottenham Hotspur can be title contenders this season under Antonio Conte.

De Zerbi filled the vacant managerial role at Brighton after the departure of Graham Potter to Chelsea last month. The Italian will come up against his compatriot Antonio Conte on Saturday as Spurs face Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Spurs were hotly-tipped to compete at the top this season after a solid summer of transfer dealing strengthened their squad. While the North London club sit in third place in the league currently, questions have been raised about their performances.

Defeat to fierce rivals Arsenal last weekend ended Spurs’ unbeaten domestic run, a crushing defeat in terms of performance and the damage to the club’s momentum in the league.

For De Zerbi however, Spurs are still title contenders this season. Speaking to the press (via Sky Sports’ Football Daily) ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, De Zerbi backed Tottenham to be right up there come the end of the year.

He said: “Tottenham this year are in the right condition to win the Premier League. It is not easy, because there is City, Liverpool, Chelsea, but in the transfer market, Tottenham bought very good players.

“After one year of work with Antonio, I think they are able to win the Premier League.”

Honestly, I think we can all see that Manchester City are going to run away with the league again this year. Adding Erling Haaland into such a creative environment has already proven to be a huge success for City, and they are going to be very hard to stop this season.

What Spurs do have, and the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea too, is the chance to finish second. Liverpool look a shadow of their former self, and there’s a window of opportunity for those around the top six to push on and oust Liverpool as City’s main competition.
