Premier League rival manager reveals his club was offered Eriksen on a free

David Moyes has revealed West Ham were offered the chance to sign former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, but did not push through with the move amid uncertainties over his health.

Eriksen has made an incredible comeback to football with fellow Premier League side Brentford after suffering a cardiac arrest with Denmark during Euro 2020 last summer.

The 30-year-old was released by his previous club Inter Milan as he was not allowed to play in Italy with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted (GOAL).

As such, he was made available as a free agent while he was working his way back up to full fitness, having been out of competitive action since June.

And Moyes has since revealed West Ham were one of a number of clubs approached by Eriksen’s representatives about a move before his eventual switch to Brentford.

However, the Hammers boss admits there was a concern over the former Spurs man’s health and fitness, which is why they decided to overlook a transfer.

Moyes said (via Daily Star): “Yes, he was mentioned to us – and to a few clubs about coming back. Eriksen is a player a lot of people would look at and think, ‘My goodness’.

“But I think everybody was more unsure then. And to be honest there’s the huge Danish connection at Brentford, with the manager [Thomas Frank] and some of their players.

“They maybe had more insight on him than the rest of us – on his health and when he was going to come back. I don’t think he played for a couple of months after he first signed for Brentford. A lot of people wondered how it was going to work out.

“He’s an inspiration to so many – to keep going and not give up. But I don’t think we ever doubted his footballing ability. Everybody recognises he’s a top footballer.”

Eriksen’s comeback story is incredible and it looks as though he is in better shape than ever despite the big scare he had last summer.

While West Ham would have benefitted from his services, he may have been a good addition for Spurs too given they have been missing a creative spark from midfield since he left the club.
