Premier League star was minutes from Tottenham move

Tottenham Hotspur became the first ever Premier League club not to sign a single player in the summer transfer window this year.

However, one current Premier League star did actually sign for Spurs back in 2012, with the deal being completed just after the window shut.

Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho has described how he was minutes away from joining Spurs and the Premier League six years ago.

Tottenham had been long-term admirers of the centre-mid, with then manager Andre Villas Boas managing him in their Porto days.

Since then, Moutinho has joined Wolves, and has take to the Prem expertly, putting in some stunning performances in the opening five games.

Spurs have lacked a spark of creativity and positive passing so far this campaign, and could do with a player with Moutinho’s current form and talents.

Joao told the Express and Star exclusively of his former transfer dealings with Spurs: “Andre Villas-Boas was my coach at Porto and when he was at Tottenham, it was very close.

“I signed, but after the deadline. It was one or two minutes, it was over. The most important thing is that I’m here now and I’m happy to help the team to achieve their goals.”

Would Moutinho have been a good signing back in 2012? Would he still have been a good signing this summer for just £5m?
