Premier League striker hails ‘unbelievable’ Spurs star as his role model growing up

Wolves attacker Hwang Hee-chan has been speaking about Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son, and claims the 31-year-old has long been a role model to him.

Heung-min Son joined Tottenham back in 2015 for a then-record fee for an Asian footballer, coming in at £22m from Bayer Leverkusen (Guardian).

That has proven to be an impeccable piece of business by Spurs, with Son going on to become the club’s captain. He also has 153 goals for the club, and 81 assists in 385 appearances over the years (Transfermarkt).

This season alone, Son has really shown his worth, stepping up in the absence of Harry Kane to lead the line for Ange Postecoglous side. Eight goals in the early stages of this campaign (Transfermarkt) indicate Son is back to his best after an uncharacteristic slump last year.

Hwang admires Tottenham’s Heung-min Son

Unfortunately, Son was unable to add to his tally in the defeat to Wolves at the weekend. His compatriot, Hwang Hee-chan also failed to hit the back of the net, despite some impressive early season form.

But, aside from facing off against one another, the pair share a mutual respect as international teammates. Hwang spoke about Son in a recent piece for the Wolves club website, and revealed how influential the Tottenham man has been for him personally.

He said: “We’ve played together for a long time, and we understand each other, we’re very close with the national team.

“He was a [role] model in Korea when I was young, I watched his game and he did very well, and is doing very well at the moment also. He’s scoring goals and is unbelievable. He’s an amazing player. I’m happy to play against him on the pitch. For me, it’s very meaningful.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Because he was in Harry Kane’s shadow for so long, and South Korea isn’t the biggest footballing nation, I think Son has always been a little underrated in a weird way. His legacy is huge, for club and country, and he is on fire for us right now.
