‘Preparing myself’ – Cristian Romero answers question on his Tottenham future

Cristian Romero has admitted that while he was left disappointed with the way Tottenham finished the campaign, he feels he enjoyed his best year on an individual level since making the move to the North London club three years ago.

It is fair to say that at the end of last season, there were a few question marks over Romero’s future as the Argentine had failed to deliver consistent displays for the Lilywhties and was part of an extremely leaky backline.

Romero admitted last summer that there was discontent between the Tottenham first-team squad and Antonio Conte (Football.London).

However, Ange Postecoglou made it clear as soon as he walked through the door last summer that the 26-year-old would be a key part of his plans, making him joint vice-captain alongside James Maddison.

The leadership responsibility has brought the best out of Romero, who has formed a formidable partnership with Micky van de Ven and has finally found the sort of consistency and confidence that he shows in an Argentinean shirt.

When asked about his 2023-24 campaign, the centre-back told Ole: “I think I’ve gone from lowest to highest. Having gone to the Premier League has already been a very important achievement for me because I knew I could grow a lot.

“The first season I had ups and downs, injuries, the adaptation wasn’t easy. The second I adapted and I think this, which was the third, was one of my best seasons I’ve ever done.”

Cristian Romero is not thinking of Tottenham exit

The defender insisted that the thought of leaving Tottenham has not crossed his mind and that he is fully focused on delivering for the Albiceleste in Copa America this summer, however, he did admit that he does analyse any offers which come his way.

When asked about the possibility of a transfer, Romero responded: “The truth is that I’m fine but for now I’m not thinking about that [transfer], I’m thinking about preparing myself these days to get to the national team in the best way possible, which is the next step I have.

“The things that come up at the moment are obviously always analysed but I’m not thinking about the future, I’m thinking about the national team. Now that I have the Copa América, I will always try to take the national team to the top and then we will see what happens.”

The Spurs vice-captain admitted that there was quite a bit of disappointment with the way Spurs ended the season but backed the side to improve next term.

He added: “I’m very happy to be in this present, even though group achievements haven’t been in the best or we didn’t expect to end like this. But also, at the group level for the coach’s first year, he has been good in all lines. We have to keep wanting more. Individually, I’m very happy for this beautiful season that I’ve had.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Every single Spurs player who has spoken over the last couple of weeks has indicated they believe in Ange’s system and that there is confidence among the squad that they will be much better next season.

It certainly appears as if the squad has not lost faith in the Aussie coach’s methods despite the appalling run of results in the final couple of months of the campaign.

If Tottenham want to keep players of the calibre of Cristian Romero beyond next season, then we simply have to start winning silverware.
