President hints reported Tottenham target should be worth around £52.1m

Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin has suggested that rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Elye Wahi is worth a whopping €60m (£52.1m).

Wahi is seen by many as the next potential superstar to emerge from French football, with the pacy forward currently having a barnstorming season.

The 20-year-old, who can play across the front three, has found the back of the net 17 times and provided six assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances this season (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham’s interest in Wahi first came to light back in February, when Telefoot claimed that the Lilywhites were monitoring the youngster ahead of the summer transfer window.

Jeunes Footeux subsequently backed up the North Londoners’ interest in the France Under-21 international, stating in April that the Premier League side are following the youngster ‘very closely’.

The publication asserted that Montpellier have set a €32m (£28.3m) price on their prized asset ahead of the summer.

However, Nicollin has now revealed that the Ligue 1 club have already turned down an offer of €25m (£21.7) for Wahi in January and remarked that he would be valued at €60m (£52.1m) if he played for a bigger club like Marseille.

The Montpellier president told L’Equipe about the young attacker: “‘It’s a logical conclusion that players formed at the club eventually leave their cocoon. (But) the aim is for everyone to be a winner.

“We have discussions with his agents and will open the door if we get the desired amount. Otherwise, he’ll be here for another season.

“In January, I refused 25 million euros, plus bonuses, from an English club. There are a lot of interested clubs.

“I think that, if Elye Wahi was the Marseille striker, he’d be worth 60 million euros!

“He’s destined to play in very big European clubs because he has the potential”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no chance that anyone would pay anywhere close to £50m for Wahi this summer.

Montpellier would want to get a bidding war going for the youngster in the hope to get a big fee but I suspect that they would be happy to sell him for around £30m-£35m.
