‘Pride and confidence’ – Heung-min Son explains why he loves working with Postecoglou at Spurs

Son Heung-min has spoken in glowing terms of Ange Postecoglu and the belief that the Australian has in his methods, admitting that he is learning a lot from the Tottenham head coach both on and off the pitch.

Postecoglou and Son first crossed paths back in 2015, with the Spurs boss, who was then in charge of the Australian national team, leading the Socceroos to a 2-1 win over South Korean in the final of the Asian Cup.

Eight years later, the Australian took charge of Tottenham, taking over the club at a tumultuous time, with one of his first acts as head coach being to hand the captaincy to Son.

The pair have clicked instantly, with the South Korean now showing a different side to him as the leader and one of the most experienced players in the dressing room.

The 31-year-old has played under many different managers at Tottenham but he admitted that working with Postecoglou has been a particular privilege since he is not only growing as a footballer but also a person.

The forward also remarked that he and his teammates are still adapting to the 58-year-old’s methods and that the team will only get better under his tutelage.

When asked about working with Postecoglou, Son told Sports Chosun: “First of all, there is a high sense of pride and confidence in the brand of football that our manager pursues. I learn tremendously from him, about his passion for football and about things I should learn from him as a human.

“I consider myself a really lucky player because so many great managers taught me many great things. I am very thankful that I was able to meet another (great) manager, learn about his football, and grow as a footballer and as a person.

“But Ange is a genuinely amazing person. I have a very high respect for him because he wants to play his unique football in any situation and feel pride in that. Right now, our players have not perfectly accommodated into his ideas. When we do, I am confident that we will become a better team.”

As has been widely documented, Ange is not the sort of manager who gets particularly close to the players, with the Australian wanting some distance to perhaps command some fear as well as respect. However, it is quite evident that he and Son have quickly built a special relationship in their six months together.
