‘Proper team player’ – Souness praises Spurs man coming good under Conte

Graeme Souness praised Ryan Sessegnon for his display in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday, with the pundit suggesting that the 22-year-old is now showing signs of maturing at Spurs.

Sessegnon came back into the starting eleven in place of Ivan Perisic, who got the nod to start in the North London derby and the 0-0 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday.

The England Under-21 international showed yet again that he can be counted upon, putting in a solid display as Spurs emerged with a 1-0 win from the Amex Stadium.

The former Fulham man had the difficult task of dealing with Solly March and Pascal Gross down his side but he stuck to his task defensively and consistently worked hard to make himself available in the final third.

Sessegnon was deservedly adjudicated to be the Player of the Match on Saturday, and Souness remarked the wing-back now looks a lot more disciplined than he used to be.

The pundit told Sky Sports Premier League (7:45 pm, October 8, 2022): “He (Sessegnon) has got great qualities, and all he has to do, for someone like him, is obviously wanting to work hard, wanting to learn.

“He has that much quality that when he was young, everyone wanted him.

“He is now at a big club where it’s not just about when you have got the ball, it’s also about when you don’t have the ball. And he now looks like a proper team player, a disciplined player.”

Sessegnon still has some technical shortcomings, with respect to his first touch and crossing but he has proven to be a lot more defensively reliable than Perisic. The 22-year-old’s pace is also very useful on the break and if he can stay injury free, this could be his breakout season at Tottenham.
