PSG chase Vertonghen as Mauricio Pochettino faces defensive nightmare ahead of the new season

According to a report French champions Paris Saint-Germain have targeted Spurs stalwart Jan Vertonghen this summer as the Belgian centre-back mulls over signing a new deal at Hotspur Way.

Vertonghen has less than a year remaining on his current contract at the club and there are concerns he could follow compatriot Toby Alderweireld in holding the club to ransom over a new deal

An article in The Times  claims Vertonghen has been offered a new deal but PSG are waiting in the wings if he gets cold feet.

Rather frustratingly we are yet to sign a player this summer and with just over two weeks left until the Premier League transfer window slams shut on August 9th, fans are understandibly becoming agitated.

The earlier deadline adopted by English clubs was supposed to help English clubs get their new signings settled before the season starts but it could end up leaving Spurs in turmoil before the season has even got under way.

Should Vertonghen reject the contract offered to him and demands a move away abroad after the window shuts, Spurs will be unable to bring in a replacement until Januar, leaving us extremely short at the back, with Alderweireld, also considering his future.

Alderweireld criticised Pochettino for his decision to leave him out of the team last season, which the Argentine boss puts down to a loss of form but the player putting it down to his refusal to sign a new deal.

Davinson Sanchez’s emergence would offer some comfort if Vertonghen and/or Alderweireld were to leave, however it would serve as a massive blow to Mauricio Pochettino to lose the core of his defence before the season starts and leave Spurs facing all to familiar problems
