PSV legend warns reported Tottenham target about Premier League move

Former PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands midfielder Gerald Vanenburg believes Tottenham target Noni Madueke should be wary of making a move to the Premier League this summer.

Madueke came through the ranks at Spurs but secured a move to the Eredivisie side in 2018 after rejecting a new contract offer.

Since the move, the 19-year-old has blossomed into a fearsome wide and central forward, establishing a starting role for PSV last season and recording nine goals and eight assists in all competitions.

Madueke has kicked on this season in a similar fashion too, notching six goals in just eight games in all competitions to date.

Those performances have reportedly captured the attention of his former side Spurs, but also across the north London divide at Arsenal and the likes of Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

However, former PSV midfielder Vanenburg has warned Madueke not to make the move to England too hastily, citing Memphis Depay and Steven Bergwijn as recent examples of stars experiencing the difficult transition.

Speaking to Voetbal International, he said: “Madueke can really become very good. He is a very special player. His qualities resemble Kylian Mbappe – drive, speed and scoring ability. The top clubs are all crazy about him.

“[Madueke] must give himself time and stay at PSV for a few years. Memphis Depay and Steven Bergwijn must be examples for him.

“Depay left too early and failed at Manchester United, Bergwijn has a hard time at Tottenham Hotspur. If [Madueke] has patience and continues to develop at PSV, the top of European football is reserved for him.”

Madueke’s continuous rise will probably not surprise anyone, given how many people were disappointed when he left the club three years ago. He clearly has all the talent to become a superstar, but staying patient in the Eredivisie to continue his development may be the play for him at the moment.
