Pundit accuses boring Harry Kane of not having ambition if he stays at Spurs

Craig Burley has claimed that Harry Kane has to fight to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer as the Lilywhites are years away from being a team that can compete for major honours.

Despite the horrific season that Spurs have had so far, Kane has continued banging in the goals with regularity, with the striker having found the back of the net 27 times in the Premier League so far this campaign (Transfermarkt).

The speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United shows no signs of slowing down as we head closer to the summer transfer window (Daily Star).

The striker himself has reportedly informed the Tottenham hierarchy that he would only make a decision on his future after the club appoint a new head coach (Football Insider).

However, in an interview with Sky Sports last week, the 29-year-old implied that he will give his two cents to Daniel Levy and the board on how Spurs can get back the culture they have lost over recent years, with some Tottenham fans seeing this statement as evidence that he could stay.

Burley believes that it would demonstrate a distinct lack of ambition if Kane remained in N17 next season.

The pundit told ESPN FC: “Harry Kane’s starting to bore me. He really is starting to.

“I don’t care how many goals he scores for Tottenham. This season in particular is ample evidence if ever needed that this club, under this ownership, are only going to be also-rans.

“If he wants to continue to be a part of that, to break a record and get a statue, where’s the ambition in that?

“There are clubs out there desperate – bigger clubs and better clubs than Tottenham – desperate for players of his ilk, top players.

“He’s an elite player. He’s a difference maker, in the right team – the difference between Man United possible winning a league next year, depending on one or two other signings, and not. That’s how big he is. That’s the difference he can make.

“What difference can he make to Tottenham now? He’s been there, he’s seen it. He’s playing that movie. And the movie replays almost all the time, and it’s the same.

“I think he has to fight strongly, and I don’t think he will, to get out of this club that are going nowhere. And if they are going somewhere, it’s years down the line when he’s retired.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The issue that Burley and other pundits seem to be ignoring here is that a move to Man Utd would certainly not offer Kane a guarantee of competing for a Premier League title or the Champions League.

In fact, there is every chance that Erik Ten Hag’s project crumbles next season and they end up finishing out of the top four.

Despite how bad things seem at Tottenham at the moment, I would also argue that we are not as far away from the top teams as it seems right now.

If we bring in the right manager and make a couple of smart acquisitions, we could quite easily improve beyond recognition next season.
