Pundit accuses summer signing of using Spurs as a stepping stone

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has accused Gareth Bale of using Tottenham Hotspur as a stepping stone.

The Welsh international made the move back to North London in the summer on a season long loan deal from Real Madrid and experienced a frustrating first few months back in England due to injury and fitness issues.

Bale has one year left on his Real contract and earlier this week played down any hope of Spurs securing his services again next season after stating his intention is to return to the Spanish capital in the summer (Sky Sports).

The 31-year-old admitted that his decision to return to Spurs was to play regular football and be match fit ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

The left-footer has only started six of Tottenham’s 29 Premier League matches this season, with most of his football having come in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions (transfermarkt).

Hislop told ESPN: “So you know what that means to him and the opportunity to go back to Spurs kind of fed into that. And that’s the only takeaway [from his comments] – happy to pick up his money, Wales is important and Spurs are just kind of a stepping stone, which we kind of knew.”
