Pundit admits he expects ‘a big club like Spurs’ to sign West Brom player

Gabby Agbonlahor has said that he expects a big club like Tottenham Hotspur to snap up West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone during the summer transfer window.

Hugo Lloris has been in fine form for Tottenham for the past 12 months, with Jose Mourinho even labelling the Frenchman as ‘the best goalkeeper in the Premier League’ recently.

Lloris looks to have a few years left in him at the top level but the North Londoners might have start scouting a long-term replacement for their club captain, who is now 34.

Joe Hart, who arrived at Spurs in the summer is just eight months younger than the French international and is more of a temporary stop-gap than a long-term answer.

It does not appear as if Mourinho and his coaching staff rate Paulo Gazzaniga too highly, with the Argentine being loaned out to Elche until the end of the season.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham will be in the market for a goalkeeper in the summer but Agbonlahor believes that Johnstone has shown that he is good enough to play for a club like Spurs with his performances for the Baggies this season.

The former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider: “West Brom will get relegated and Sam Johnstone will get a move back to the Premier League.

“He’s shown with his performances this season, the saves he’s made that he’s a top class goalkeeper. He’s really good on the ball too.

“100 per cent Sam will stay in the Premier League. It wouldn’t surprise me if a big club like Spurs went in for him as well.

“He was at Manchester United, he knows what it’s like to be at a big club and I can see that happening for sure.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would not mind Spurs bringing in Johnstone in the summer on a cut-price deal in the summer if West Brom go down. He will be an upgrade over Hart as Hugo’s main understudy. However, he has not done enough to warrant the number one shirt at Tottenham.
