Pundit admits it would be ‘unbelievably painful’ to see one player join Spurs

Pat Nevin has admitted that while it would hurt to see Conor Gallagher in a Tottenham shirt, the midfielder would be a better fit for Spurs than he is for Chelsea.

Reports linking Gallagher with a move across London to Tottenham continue to intensify as we get closer to the summer transfer window.

Last week, The Sun claimed that Spurs are aware of Chelsea’s need to raise funds before the end of June and plan to make a move for the midfielder quite early in the transfer window.

The outlet added that the Lilywhites’ plan is to get the England international through the door before the start of pre-season.

A couple of days ago, HITC revealed that Gallagher and his representatives now accept that his time at Stamford Bridge is likely to come to an end this summer.

The report said that while the 23-year-old would prefer to remain at his boyhood club and Mauricio Pochetitno would like to keep him, the player’s entourage know that a sale is likely, given the club’s financial predicament and their client’s contract situation.

Could Conor Gallagher cross the Spurs-Chelsea divide?

Nevin admitted that Gallagher’s situation might be out of Pochettino’s hands and suggested that the midfielder might thrive under Ange Postecoglou.

The pundit told Grosvenor Sport (via The Metro): “In an ideal world where finances are all balanced, Chelsea would absolutely not be looking to sell Conor Gallagher. I can’t imagine it, it’s unthinkable. Similar to when Mason Mount left. But if the finances say you need to do it then you need to do it.

“It may be unbelievably painful for a lot of Chelsea fans because, as someone said to me the other day, it feels like selling the family silver. Chelsea have been selling off bits of the stadium and hotels and it’s slightly discomforting but the accountants are in control really.

“You wouldn’t be surprised if he went to someone like Spurs signed Conor Gallagher, obviously that would be particularly painful for Chelsea fans. But what a player he would be for them, I’d probably say he’s better suited to Spurs, the way he plays.”

“The transfer situation is really quite delicate with Chelsea because we don’t know who is making the decisions and that’s what it comes down to. If it comes down to the manager then he will make changes and will want to get rid of a number of players and bring in more experience in certain areas.

“But I have no doubt that he may not be the one making any decision which is quite common in the modern game, so that’s a kind of slight delicacy of it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Postecolgou has had his eye on Gallagher for a long time and that Tottenham have been plotting a move for the midfielder since last summer.

So an offer from the Lilywhites for the 23-year-old is inevitable this summer but perhaps Chelsea would prefer to sell the player to someone else other than Spurs.
