Pundit argues one defensive Spurs player ‘hasn’t played well’ in recent weeks

Paul Robinson has claimed Hugo Lloris has not played well under Antonio Conte but insists he cannot be expected to perform immaculately every week.

The Spurs captain, who signed a two-year contract extension in January, has been called upon on plenty of occasions this season with his side enduring a mixed campaign.

However, in recent weeks, Lloris has endured a number of shaky moments which have led to the concession of crucial goals in Tottenham’s pursuit for a top-four place.

Antonio Conte recently admitted he needs the Frenchman, alongside Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, to take the reins for his side (Sky Sports) as they continue to chase down North London rivals Arsenal.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson believes Lloris’ recent displays have been lacking, but there should not be too much criticism on his shoulders given how busy he has been kept this season.

He told Football Insider: “He could have done better in recent weeks but it would be very harsh to criticise him.

“In the main, he has returned to form this season. You cannot maintain that level week in, week out. As a goalkeeper, you are going to concede goals.

“Everyone is an expert on goalkeeping, as I found out through my career. There is no bigger critic of goalkeepers than themselves. You always think there is something you could have done to prevent a goal, even if it rips the top corner of the net out.

“Lloris hasn’t played particularly well of late but I wouldn’t go as far as saying he’s gone off the boil.”

Lloris will know more than anyone else that his performances of late have been lacking, but the team as a whole has struggled a lot too.

It is a team effort at the end of the day and if Spurs are to at least end the season on a positive note, then everyone needs to pull their weight and get the basics right.
