Pundit backs Championship club to sign Spurs player if they get promoted this summer

Noel Whelan has backed Leeds United to sign Juan Foyth this summer if the club achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Reports indicate that Juan Foyth has played his final game for Tottenham and is likely to be one of the players pushed towards the exit door this summer.

The Argentina international has hinted that he may leave the North Londoners this summer if he can’t secure more game time (TNT).

Barcelona (Mirror) and Sampdoria (Calcio Mercato) are said to have expressed interest in signing the young defender. Football Insider claimed this month that Leeds United were also contenders for the 22-year-old’s signature.

The report claimed that Marcelo Bielsa wanted to sign Foyth on loan in January and is likely to return with a permanent offer for his compatriot when the transfer market opens.

Whelan believes that the Spurs defender would be a perfect for his former club as they may require a central defender with Premier League experience should they make the step up to the top-flight next season.

The former Leeds star told Football Insider: “I like Foyth. He has shown that he can play in the Premier League, it does not faze him.

“If Ben White moves on then you are at least replacing him with Premier League experience. He is a good player but there are question marks over whether he is the same calibre as Ben White.

“A run of games would certainly benefit him. It has been a while since he has played regularly but I like the qualities he possesses.

“I could definitely see that one happening. It is almost a no-brainer. If they could get that over the line it would be a good deal because it would not cost a fortune.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that almost all clubs in Spain and Italy seem to be struggling financially, I can certainly see Leeds getting Foyth if they make a decent offer for him. Bielsa can also convince the defender that he can shine at Elland Road. While I would prefer for us to loan Foyth out, I expect him to be sold as we need to raise some funds for our own targets.
