Pundit backs Premier League star to reject West Ham in favour of Spurs move

Alan Hutton has said Ivan Toney may not think twice before rejecting West Ham United’s advances in favour of a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

It seems quite clear that Toney is on his way out of the Gtech Community Stadium, with the striker having just a year left on his contract. Tottenham have been mooted as a potential destination for the centre-forward.

Earlier this month, GiveMeSport handed Spurs a boost by claiming Manchester United have reservations about moving for the England international while Arsenal do not consider him a target.

The publication suggested this might open the door for Ange Postecoglou’s men to swoop for the centre-forward when the transfer window opens.

However, a couple of days ago, TBR Football reported that Toney is likely to end up at either West Ham or Chelsea this summer.

The report said that even though Spurs like the Brentford star, they are unlikely to bid above £40m for him this summer while the Hammers have made it known to the striker’s entourage that they hold ‘a firm interest in their client.

Alan Hutton backs Ivan Toney to choose Spurs over West Ham

However, Hutton has said that he would be surprised if the 27-year-old ends up at the London Stadium rather than the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

When asked about the speculation over Toney’s future, the former Spurs right-back told Football Insider: “Maybe I’m a little bit biased here, but out of the two teams, I think he’d prefer Tottenham. Playing in that stadium and the way they play at this time. It looks like Lopetegui is going to come into West Ham and could be changing things.

“Antonio is not getting any younger so maybe they’re looking for somebody else to lead the line. He’d score goals for both teams, in my opinion. There’s no doubt about that, he scores a barrel load at Brentford. No disrespect to them, but I think other teams will make more opportunities for him.

“I just think, at this moment in time, Tottenham look like the team that are going to be chasing the top four. I’m not saying they’re definitely going to get in there, but they’re definitely chasing. That could be a good opportunity for him. I think he could be the difference between getting it and not getting it in future seasons.”

If it was a straight decision between Tottenham and West Ham, with everything else being equal, there is no doubt that Toney would choose Spurs.

However, it does sound like the Hammers want him more desperately and they might be willing to offer the striker a higher salary than their London rivals.
