Pundit backs Aston Villa to swoop for player Spurs loaned out in January

Kevin Phillips believes that Paulo Gazzaniga would be an ideal acquisition for Aston Villa this summer.

Tottenham confirmed Gazzaniga’s departure last week after his contract with the North London club ran out.

The Argentine had been an important player for Spurs during the four seasons he spent at the club, often deputising competently for Hugo Lloris when the Frenchman was out injured.

However, the 29-year-old was replaced by Joe Hart as Lloris’ main understudy last summer and was subsequently allowed to join Elche on loan for the second half of the season.

The former Southampton man took to social media to thank the club and the fans for their support after it was confirmed that he would be leaving last week.

Phillips believes that Gazzaniga is just the man to offer competition to Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park, with Tom Heaton sealing a move to Manchester United after his contract with Dean Smith’s men ran out.

When asked about the departed Spurs goalkeeper, the former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “Definitely, that could be a good option for Villa.

“With Gazzaniga and Martinez being of the same nationality they’ll know each other.

“It’s a great move for Heaton. When you get the chance to go to Manchester United, you go.

“It is an area Villa will need to address, and Gazzaniga is a player that I felt did well every time he played for Spurs.”
