Pundit believes one Spurs man would jump ship if Liverpool came calling

Jermaine Pennant believes that Ange Postecoglou would be the ideal candidate to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, insisting that the Tottenham head coach would not think twice about jumping ship if Liverpool came calling.

Soon after Klopp announced that he would be parting ways with Liverpool at the end of this season, it was reported by The Athletic in January that Postecoglou is one of the candidates in consideration to replace the German at the helm.

The Spurs boss’ stock has risen considerably in light of the transformative effect he has had on the Lilywhites, who have transitioned from a counter-attacking side into arguably the most entertaining side to watch across the Premier League.

Various reports over the past couple of months have indicated that Tottenham have no fears about losing their head coach to any of their rivals this summer (Telegraph).

When the question of Postecoglou moving to Liverpool was put to Fabrizio Romaon a few days ago on The Spurs Chat Podcast, the journalist suggested that he expects the 58-year-old to stay with the North London club for the long haul.

Would Ange Postecoglou be tempted by Liverpool?

However, Pennant has no doubts that the Tottenham boss will be overjoyed at the chance to join Liverpool, just a year on from taking the Spurs job.

While discussing Klopp’s potential replacement, the former Reds winger told talkSPORT: “I would like to see [Ange] Postecoglou there. He’s probably in the conversation. The way Spurs were to the way they are now is night and day – and that is credit to him.

“I think if Liverpool came knocking on the door and said, ‘Here you go, mate, get yourself in, Klopp’s going’, I think he’d be jumping ship. The reason I am saying that is because Liverpool will always be fighting for silverware, the Champions League, and the Premier League.

“They have won everything domestically in the last eight, seven years. If he is at Spurs, they have not won anything for donkey’s years. If Liverpool come knocking, I think he is jumping ship. Why would you not manage a better team? And you are guaranteed to be in the mix of winning silverware. I would like to see Postecoglou there.”

Liverpool are a huge club and anyone in world football would be tempted if they came knocking. However, the thing that Pennant is not considering is that the decision for managers is a lot different than it is for players.

Postecoglou will be up against it at Liverpool as Klopp is a hard act to follow and anything other than winning Premier League and Champions League titles would be considered a failure.

At Tottenham, he is now at a club that have the same resources as Liverpool do but one that has significantly underachieved. His stock would rise substantially if he could win any sort of silverware at N17. There is thus no tempting reason for Ange to abandon the project he has started at Spurs.
