Pundit believes Spurs-linked 29-year-old would be an upgrade on Ben Davies

Kevin Phillips believes that Alex Sandro would be a brilliant acquisition for Tottenham this summer and would also serve as an upgrade on Ben Davies at left-back.

There have been contradictory reports over whether or not Tottenham are in the market for a left-back this summer.

Sky Sports suggested that a left-sided centre half and a right-back are the areas in which the Lilywhites are looking for additions. Football Insider added that Jose Mourinho is happy with his options at left-back and wants to promote academy graduate Dennis Cirkin.

However, Tutto Mercato Web (as translated by the Daily Mail) reported earlier this week that Spurs have set their sights on Sandro and are prepared to offer Serge Aurier in exchange for the Juventus man.

Phillips believes that Tottenham need an addition at left-back and the Juve star is the perfect type of player. Speaking to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker said: “Left-back and centre-half have to be the priority with Vertonghen looking likely to leave.

“Defensively they will have to strengthen in the summer. If they can get a decent left-back in it could be a very exciting area of the pitch for Spurs.

“Ben Davies is a good player but, wow, if you can bring in a class player like that, it would be a good signing for Tottenham. Sandro looks a class player.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I disagree with Phillips that left-back should be a priority considering we have four different options in Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga and Dennis Cirkin, who can all play the role. A right-back, a defensive midfielder and a back-up striker are much bigger priorities for us this summer.
