Pundit believes Spurs-linked centre-back will end up at Liverpool instead

Former Netherlands international Andy Van der Meyde expects Liverpool to win the race for rumoured Tottenham target Jurrien Timber this summer.

Jurrien Timber has been one of the stand-out centre-backs in the Eredivisie over the past couple of years and despite being just 21 years of age, he is already an important part of the Netherlands senior set-up.

It appears only a matter of time before the youngster is poached by a big European club, with 90 min claiming back in March that both Spurs and Manchester United are eyeing a move for him this summer.

The central defender had also been linked with a move to Spurs last summer, with Todofichajes even reporting at the time that Fabio Paratici had entered into talks regarding a deal for the player.

Timber himself revealed in an interview with De Telegraaf two weeks ago that Ajax agreed last summer that he can leave the club in 2023 and remarked that a transfer is getting ‘closer and closer’.

Van der Meyde believes that the Ajax starlet will follow his compatriot Cody Gakpo to Anfield.

The pundit said on Voetbal Zone: “There may be eight or nine players that Ajax will have to say goodbye to.

“Timber will probably go to Liverpool. They (the Premier League clubs) also pay crazy money. Then you can start building again.”

Timber looks a cut above everyone else in the Dutch top flight but being a central defender in the Premier League is a lot more demanding and the jury is out on whether he would be able to make the transition.

At the very least, the youngster will take a season to get used to the demands of English football, which is why he would not be the sort of readymade signing that Spurs need at the back this summer.
