Alan Hutton has claimed that Tottenham could sign a player worth £90 million in the shape of Adama Traore but doubts whether he currently has the quality to perform at the top level.
Spurs are reportedly confident on striking a deal for the winger, with Antonio Conte allegedly shortlisting him as an option to come into the club at right wing-back.
Former Spurs defender Hutton, who played alongside Traore during his brief spell at Aston Villa, believes the 25-year-old still has not realised his full potential as of yet.
However, the Scotsman feels Conte could be adding a useful and valuable asset to his squad if he can get the best out of him.
He told Football Insider: “It is a big if. It’s a huge if. I find this a difficult one as I’ve worked with him. I know what he’s capable of. We just don’t see it enough.
“It’s frustrating because you know what he could be capable of. If you can get him in the right frame of mind, you can work with him on what he needs to produce on the pitch.
“If you could unlock him and bring out the best in him, week after week after week, he would be an £80-90 million player. That’s what we’re talking about here.
“It’s about trying to find his right position. Getting the best out of him and making him understand what he needs to bring to the party.
“For the position, you need to play in the Tottenham team at the moment, you’re pivotal to what they do.
“You need to create and is he capable of that at the moment at that high level? I’m not so sure. But look, he’s got all the attributes that it takes to be a top-class winger or however you want to play him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is pretty well documented that Traore has obvious strengths and weaknesses that need addressing. But at the reported price point, it could be a good move for Spurs to pursue in the hope that Conte can mould him into a particular style that fulfils his potential.
