Pundit claims 23-year-old will thrive underJose Mourinho’s system

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Joe Rodon will relish playing under Jose Mourinho given how deep Tottenham’s backline defend.

Rodon was handed his first Tottenham start in the all-important London derby against Chelsea last weekend and barring a few nervy moments, the 23-year-old coped admirably against the Blues’ forwards.

The home side peppered the Spurs box with crosses in the second half and the former Swansea man showed great anticipation and courage to put his head to everything that was thrown at him.

The central defender admitted after the game that he did get away with a couple of mistakes and vowed to keep learning and improving.

Reports indicate that Mourinho and his coaching staff have been impressed with what they have seen of the Welsh international in training.

Agbonlahor was complimentary of Rodon’s debut performance and suggested that the young defender could thrive in Tottenham’s system, given the lack of space for opposition forwards to run in-behind.

The pundit told Football Insider: “I thought he did very well against Chelsea.

“The sort of tactics that Jose Mourinho used suited him, he didn’t leave any space in behind, Spurs were very compact.

“He had a lot of help from Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg either side helping him and they went to a six at the back at times.

“It was a comfortable game for him, he didn’t get tested a lot.

“I’m sure he’ll enjoy Jose Mourinho’s tactics because his defenders are very protected by the midfielders.

“It was a promising debut and I’m sure he’ll continue to get more games.”
