Former Coventry City forward, Noel Whelan has claimed that Harry Winks has lost his confidence due his lack of regular game time this season.

Winks was finding minutes hard to come by earlier in the season when Spurs were on a good run, with Jose Mourinho preferring to start Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko as a double-pivot to protect the back four.

The England international has been handed more minutes over the last couple of months as Mourinho has chopped and changed his side in an effort to turn around the team’s poor run of form.

However, the 25-year-old has not yet managed to stake a claim for a place in the consistent starting line up as his performances have been quite mixed.

The fact that the Tottenham boss has recently preferred to start Tanguy Ndombele in a deeper role rather than as a number ten has not helped the England international’s prospects of getting game time.

Whelan admitted that Winks is one of several Tottenham stars whose confidence has been drained by the team’s poor run of form.

When asked about the midfielder’s struggles, the pundit told Football Insider: “I think lack of games doesn’t help.

“I think when you’re not playing regularly, you’re fighting performances, you’re fighting to find that belief, and that confidence in your game.

“It’s very difficult to find it in 20 minutes, coming on here and there and especially when Tottenham are not going through the best of times, that confidence dwindles throughout the whole squad, not just one player, but it doesn’t help when you’re not playing regularly.

“I think there’s a number of players there that are feeling the effects of bad performances and results and seeing that Premier League kind of push slip away, when they were talking about them becoming contenders, they’re going to be right there till the end – well, they’re not.

“That’s come pretty quickly as a wake-up call to the Tottenham side, hasn’t it?

“After all the plaudits, this is what happens, this is football – if you can’t keep up with the Joneses in terms of quality, results and performances then very quickly this big Tottenham side, that was supposed to be all this, very quickly have seen that they’re not.

“I think it drains a lot of players and does kill your spirit, I think that’s what’s happening at the minute with Winks.”

While Winks is clearly a talented player with a lot of technical quality, he seems mentally quite fragile. He is very much a confidence player who needs a run of games in the side to show his quality. Hopefully, playing 90 minutes in the Europa League yesterday will help restore at least some of his lost confidence.
