Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that James Maddison would choose to join Newcastle United over Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Until last month, reports had indicated that Spurs were the frontrunners for Maddison’s signature ahead of Newcastle (Telegraph) but the situation may well have now changed since then.
While the Magpies now look nailed on to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Tottenham’s hopes of getting into the top four are all but over.
Football Insider claimed on Wednesday that Newcastle have now started preliminary talks with Leicester City regarding a summer deal for Maddison.
The publication claimed that Eddie Howe is keen to add more creativity to his midfield and had identified the 26-year-old as the ‘ideal fit’, with the St James’ Park hierarchy alleged to be laying the groundwork for a summer deal.
Agbonlahor believes that the choice between a move to the North East and North London would be straightforward for Maddison.
The former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT (10/5 8:42am): “I don’t think players are going to want to come [to Tottenham].
“They could be in the Europa League. For instance, for me, Leicester will go down. Either way, James Maddison is going to leave.
“Is he going to Newcastle or Spurs? He would go to Newcastle every day of the week. [They’ve got] Champions League football, they’ve got a project there and are Spurs going to attract the players that they need.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Newcastle are a club on the up while Tottenham now seem to be heading in the opposite direction.
However, if we appoint a top-class manager like Julian Nageslmann, there is no reason why we cannot attract top players to the club this summer.
We have some world-class players in our squad and boast one of the best stadiums and training grounds in the world. So, the club will undoubtedly remain an attractive option for many top players.
