Pundit claims 27-year-old Premier League midfielder would ‘suit’ Tottenham

Darren Bent believes Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse could prove a smart acquisition for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ward-Prowse’s talent has never been in question since he broke into the Saint’s first team as a teenager back in 2012.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino waxed lyrical about him when he was in charge of the Saints in 2013, labelling him a ‘figurehead’ and role model for other young players (Sky Sports).

The midfielder has always been blessed with great technical quality and a fantastic engine but he has become a lot more consistent over recent years and has thus been a regular in England squads.

The Telegraph reported during last summer’s transfer window that Tottenham and Aston Villa were battling it out for the 27-year-old’s signature but he once again stayed put at St Mary’s.

Bent believes the time has come for Ward-Prowse to leave the South Coast, and named Spurs as one of the potential destinations for the midfielder.

The former Tottenham striker told talkSPORT (26 April, 9.50 am): “I kind of feel like the type of club who should be in for that player is Newcastle. They’re in a rebuild.

“(Would Ward-Prowse go to) Liverpool? No. Manchester City? No. Chelsea? No. Tottenham, why not? (Rodrigo) Bentancur, (Pierre-Emile) Hojbjerg and him. I think he’d suit them.

“Arsenal? Potentially, because (Granit) Xhaka looks like he’ll go at the end of the season. So maybe there’s an opportunity there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ward-Prowse certainly has the engine and tactical discipline needed to thrive in Conte’s set-up. The 27-year-old has a better passing range than any of our midfielders and would also solve our deadball issues.

However, Ward-Prowse strikes me as the kind of player who is happy to be playing for his boyhood club. So, I am not sure he will push for a move away from St Mary’s.
