Pundit claims ‘brilliant signing’ could force Spurs star into spell on the bench

Noel Whelan has claimed Dejan Kulusevski’s strong form for Tottenham could force Lucas Moura to face a spell on the bench.

Kulusevski, who joined Spurs from Juventus on transfer deadline day last month, has made a good impression in his short stint in North London so far.

The Sweden international was instrumental in Tottenham’s 4-0 demolition of Leeds United on Saturday, as he recorded his third goal contribution in three Premier League starts.

He has also taken advantage of cementing a place in the Spurs fold following the absence of Moura, who has been suffering with a dead leg in recent games.

As such, Whelan believes Kulusevski’s current spell of form could make it difficult for the Brazilian winger to force his way back into contention.

Whelan told Football Insider: “When you’re scoring, creating assists, and playing as well as Kulusevski is – you become very difficult to drop.

“That competition for places is really hotting up for Tottenham, especially in midfield and at wing-back. The manager now has the depth he needs to make changes that will allow them to win games.

“Lucas Moura might well be on the bench for a while – but what a player to turn to if they ever need some inspiration in a tough game.

“Conte has some real options and there’s no doubt that Kulusevski has been a great addition for Tottenham. He’s looking like a brilliant signing.”

Kulusevski’s current deal at Spurs is an 18-month loan deal, which will become permanent for around £45 million in total if certain conditions and club achievements are met (Sky Sports).

This is the type of thing that Antonio Conte wants at Tottenham – competition. With Kulusevski performing well straight from the get-go, it will hopefully push the likes of Moura and other wingers to work hard to earn a place back in the line-up.
