Pundit claims ex-Chelsea player would be ‘great signing’ for Spurs or Arsenal

John Barnes has claimed that ex-Chelsea centre-back, Marc Guehi, would be a great signing for Tottenham or Arsenal in the summer.

The Daily Mail recently claimed that Arsenal could challenge Tottenham for the services of the Crystal Palace centre-back.

Guehi has developed impressively since his switch from Chelsea to Selhurst Park in 2021, having emerged as the leader of the Eagles’ backline this season.

The 22-year-old is thought to be one of the names on Tottenham’s radar, with Football Transfers reporting back in March that the Lilywhites believe the Palace star is a perfect fit for the profile of defender they are looking for.

The report added that although Spurs are currently leading the race for the England international’s signature, they could face competition from Manchester United for the youngster.

The Mail also backed up Tottenham’s interest in Guehi but add that they might have to battle their North London rivals for the player’s signature.

It was asserted that the Gunners want to strengthen at centre-back amid concerns over William Saliba’s long-term fitness while Rob Holding’s contract is up next year.

They are thought to have identified Guehi as a potential option and are said to be keeping an eye on the defender’s situation.

When asked about Guehi, Barnes said (BonusCodeBets via Metro): “Marc Guehi would be a great signing for Arsenal and Tottenham.

“He’s been knocking on the door of the England side for a few years now. He’s English, he’s young with good technical ability on the ball and he’s quick so he’s a modern centre-back.

“He’s decent enough in the air to cope and he’s got a great attitude from what I’m led to believe. He’s a good character around the dressing room.”

Guehi certainly will not come cheap as he is contracted to Palace until 2026 and there could be a bidding war for his services this summer.

Given that we are not likely to be in the Champions League next season, it could prove quite difficult to attract someone of the 22-year-old’s quality.
