Pundit claims failed transfer target would walk into the Spurs side

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that Aston Villa star Jack Grealish, who came close to a move to Spurs in the summer of 2018 (The Mirror), would walk into the current Tottenham team.

Spurs were linked heavily Grealish a year and a half ago but the transfer fell through in the end after the Midlands club were bought by new owners (Birmingham Mail).

Grealish himself admitted that he came close to making the move to North London and revealed that he was disappointed when the transfer collapsed (Sky Sports).

Since then, the 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength and captained his boyhood club back to the Premier League last season.

His performances in the top flight this campaign have caught the eye with calls for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad (Mail).

Speaking about the talented midfielder, Merson said to the Daily Star: “Grealish would walk into the United team. Tottenham tried to get him not long ago and he’d walk into their team right now as well.

“I can’t explain to people how good this kid is. Aston Villa lost 6-1 to Manchester City and he was the only one who still had time on the ball.

“His composure is something else. I don’t understand why clubs aren’t queuing up to try and sign him.”

It’s a real shame that we missed out on him as Levy wanted to save a couple of million pounds transfer fees. Even back then, he looked like he would have been a perfect fit for Spurs. He is exactly the type of player that we are missing right now – someone can drive with the ball through midfield. Hopefully, Gedson can now help fill that void for the moment.
