Pundit claims Harry Kane is not as good as Shearer or Rooney – Carragher disagrees

Micah Richards has argued that Harry Kane is not as good as Alan Shearer or Wayne Rooney but Jamie Carragher disagreed with the former Manchester City star’s assessment.

Kane not only overtook Jimmy Greaves’ record to become Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer yesterday but has also become just the third player to score 200 times in the Premier League after Shearer and Rooney.

The Tottenham man got to the landmark two games quicker than Shearer and in 158 fewer appearances than Roooney (Premierleague.com).

However, Richards insisted that the Spurs man is not at the same level as the Newcastle United and Manchester United legends.

The former Man City man argued that Shearer was the better goalscorer due to the variety of goals he scored but Carragher pushed back against that claim, praising Kane for continuing to be prolific in front of goal despite dropping deeper over the last couple of seasons.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it is fair to suggest that Shearer was a better goalscorer than Kane (even though I disagree with that statement) and one can argue that Rooney was a better playmaker than Kane.

However, what separates Kane from the other two is that he is excellent at doing both, which is why I believe he is a most well-rounded centre-forward out of the three players.

I also disagree with nostalgia merchants who think defenders were better 10 to 20 years ago. The Premier League, at the moment, is much more competitive than it was during Rooney’s and Shearer’s era, owing to the resources that smaller clubs have.

Teams are also much better coached and organised defensively while centre-forwards are asked to do a lot more these days than just score goals, which is why I believe that Kane’s achievement is superior to that of the other two.
