Pundit claims Harry Kane ‘showed a disrespect’ to Spurs in Man City win

Stan Collymore has claimed Harry Kane showed ‘disrespect’ to Tottenham with his performance against Manchester City on Saturday.

Spurs stunned the Premier League leaders with a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium to bring an end to a run of three consecutive defeats. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites could not build on that though as they fell to another loss to Burnley last night at Turf Moor.

Kane played a vital role in Tottenham’s scalp, freeing Heung-min Son after just four minutes who then squared for January signing Dejan Kulusevski to net his first Spurs goal.

City levelled shortly before the break, but the England captain restored Spurs’ lead with a high effort past Ederson after a perfectly weighted cross from Son.

A Riyad Mahrez penalty in injury time seemingly rescued a point for the hosts, but Spurs pressed for a winner just moments later and earned one through Kane, who nodded a header into the net to secure a vital three points in the chase for the top four.

Kane’s all-round display was arguably his best of the season, in which we have seen subdued form coming off the back of a failed move to City last summer (Sky Sports).

But former Liverpool man Collymore, who praised Kane for his showing against the champions, has been left confused as to why he has not performed in a similar manner at other points this term.

Collymore wrote in his column for the Mirror: “It was an exceptional all-round strike performance. But where has it been all season? Is it grossly unfair on Tottenham and their fans who pay his wages that they don’t see it more.

“How can you be world-class one week, and then be just ok, within yourself, for the previous 20 games? Harry has got two years of being able to score top numbers. He is not the physical presence that Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Cristiano Ronaldo are.

“But I do wonder if he has missed the boat on a big move. If City win the Champions League this season Pep Guardiola may say actually the reason to sign Harry, that extra push for the European trophy, doesn’t apply anymore.

“Do they want to spend big, and give a five-year contract to a man who is 29 before next season, or go for Erling Haaland, who would be at his peak.

“On Saturday we saw Harry finding the edge to be so good that Pep can’t ignore him next summer. But if it’s Kane or Haaland, they’ll sign Haaland and they’ll be future proofed by it. There is no way he should be the 16th top scorer in the Prem.

“He would only be worth £70 million this summer, and it won’t be financial restrictions that stop it. City need a striker, but it all depends on whether they can get Haaland. The next phase for City probably means looking to the next generation.

“That performance against City, brilliant though it was, showed a disrespect to Spurs for his levels in other games this season.”

Despite Collymore’s claim, Kane has managed to notch 17 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

For whatever reason, Kane stepped up his game against City which was a big positive for Spurs ultimately. I wouldn’t be so sure as to say he has shown ‘disrespect’ to the club, though, as it implies he downed tools earlier this season because of what happened last summer.
