Pundit claims Liverpool player should move to Spurs to ‘cement his own legacy’

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could be the perfect successor to Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur.

If reports over the last couple of months are to be believed, this season is likely to be Lloris’ final one as Spurs’ number one.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed last week that Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, Brentford’s David Raya, Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan are the four options at the top of the North London club’s wishlist to take over the gloves next season.

However, Petit believes that the Lilywhites should instead look to pinch Kelleher from Anfield.

The Republic of Ireland international, who came through Liverpool’s academy, has served as Alisson Becker’s main understudy since the start of last season and has done well whenever he has been called upon.

Petit believes that the 24-year-old is good enough to be Spurs’ long-term number one and urged the goalkeeper to make the switch to Liverpool’s Premier League rivals.

The former Arsenal man told The Irish Mirror: “Hugo Lloris is 36, he has had a few injuries and has retired from the national team – he is not the future anymore.

“(Fraser) Forster is also 34, so Tottenham may need a refresh in that department.

“Kelleher is 24 years old. In the cup fixtures last season, especially against Chelsea, he was really good.

“If he wants to cement his own legacy, he should leave and join Tottenham.”

Antonio Conte will want a goalkeeper who has proven himself at the top level over a consistent period to take over the gloves from Lloris.

Kelleher simply has not played enough in the top flight to suggest that he is ready to be the number one at a Champions League club.
