Pundit claims midfield who left Spurs in January was a ‘victim of Mourinho’

Kevin Campbell has claimed Dele Alli’s struggles at Tottenham came as a result of Jose Mourinho’s appointment two years ago.

Alli departed Tottenham for Everton on transfer deadline day last month after reportedly being made available for an exit (Evening Standard).

The move to the Toffees will act as an opportunity for redemption for the 25-year-old, who struggled to stake a meaningful claim under Spurs head coach Antonio Conte.

The Italian used Alli sparingly, appearing in just three Premier League games since his appointment in early November (Transfermarkt).

Former Premier League striker Campbell has since attempted to pinpoint exactly where it started to go wrong for Alli in N17. As such, he believes Tottenham’s appointment of Mourinho two years ago significantly derailed the England international’s progress.

Asked whether new Everton manager Frank Lampard can turn Alli’s career around, Campbell told talkSPORT (08/02/22, 9:12am): “Bringing Dele Alli, who had really gone stale at Spurs, and I think he is a victim of Mourinho, if I am honest with you.

“Before Mourinho actually went there, he was an England international. Since Mourinho came in, I think Dele Alli lost his way a little bit.”

Interestingly, Alli started very well under Mourinho before it all went south. We don’t exactly know what happened for Mourinho to stop trusting him in games, and that really could have affected his confidence to this day. Everton isn’t an easy place for him to turn his career back around, but if he puts his mind to it, it can be possible for him to do that.
