Pundit claims Mourinho may have talked to Roma even before Spurs sacking

Noel Whelan has suggested that Jose Mourinho may have already agreed to take charge of AS Roma even before he was sacked by Tottenham.

While the timing of Mourinho’s sacking by Spurs came as a surprise in the week leading up to the Carabao Cup final, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Portuguese coach for quite some time.

The 58-year-old did not have to wait too long before returning to management, with Roma confirming last week that they had reached an agreement with the former Spurs boss to take over from Paulo Fonseca at the end of the season.

Reports indicate that Roma made contact with Jose Mourinho immediately after he was sacked by Tottenham, with the Serie A club’s director Tiago Pinto contacting Valdir Cardoso, Jorge Mendes’ right-hand man, to enquire about the Special One.

However, Whelan believes that Mourinho may have been contacted by Roma even before he parted ways with the North Londoners.

The pundit told Football Insider: “Strange things happen in football. You’re never surprised, are you?

“Especially with Jose Mourinho, you can never write him off. It seemed like something was in place before he’d even left the club.

“That was best for both parties, it wasn’t happening at Tottenham. He lost a lot of the players there and they were playing boring football.

“It looks like everyone’s in a happier place right now.”
