Pundit claims Mourinho was ‘annoyed’ by player during draw at Newcastle

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has claimed that Jose Mourinho was left annoyed by Lucas Moura against Newcastle United.

The Brazilian was named in the Portuguese’s starting eleven for Sunday’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park with Heung-min Son named among the substitutes after recovering from the hamstring injury which he suffered in the North London derby defeat to Arsenal.

The 28-year-old was replaced by Erik Lamela in the 68th minute of the match at the weekend with Nevin making the suggestion while Moura was heading off the pitch.

Nevin believes that Mourinho was not impressed with Moura’s failure to track back and cover space defensively against the Magpies.

Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw by Steve Bruce’s side which saw the North Londoners pass up the opportunity to move back into the top four.

Nevin, who was on co-commentary duty said about Moura in the 64th minute of the fixture on BBC Radio 5 Live (3:27pm, April 4, 2021): “I think he annoyed his manager about five, 10 minutes ago, by not covering into the space. He had to cover that space. There was a little far too much of an area, and you can’t do that with Jose Mourinho.

“You can get away with it once, you can’t get away with it twice, and he has brought Lucas Moura off. And you are right, very quiet game for a player who is obviously an extremely talented player.”

Moura was not at his best against Newcastle but in his defence, he has arguably been one of our best players in recent matches.

The former PSG man offers a burst of pace which very few of our attacking players can offer.
